A long overdue review, but well deserved nonetheless. Sushi Red is the epitome of the iconic old-school, mom and pop sushi restaurant that brings to mind the highest quality of craftsmanship and freshness. I've been a customer here for over 15 years, before I'd even moved to the Plainville area, and they've remained the highest quality sushi place around. They unfortunately seem to fly under the radar as newer, more popular sushi places have come (and gone), but to overlook this gem-hidden-in-plain-sight is a disservice to anyone looking for a legitimacy. The menu is modest, not the mix of sushi/hibachi/thai that you'll see in others in the Plainville/Southington area, but it's to their benefit. Everything is crafted to meticulous perfection by the master chef. As you're welcomed in (the preparation area and bar are directly in plain sight), you're seated with a pot of green tea to side in your decision. My personal staple in the Birthday Roll, generous chunks of tuna and avocado rolled tightly with rice and adorned with salmon. Simple, perfect. After your meal you're treated to a green tea mochi (which are also for sale) and thanked, with a bow.

A no frills sushi restaurant with an unassuming exterior and simple interior. We ordered the small sushi platter, which came with 10 pieces of assorted nigiri, 1 Cali roll, 1 tuna roll, 1 salmon roll, 1 chef special roll. The highlights were the yellowtail nigiri, the dragon roll, and the fried soft-shell crab roll. The yellowtail was fresh and sweet. I loved the presentation of the dragon roll, especially with the thinly sliced avocado. The fried soft-shell crab wasn't heavy or greasy like in a lot of sushi restaurants. My only disappointment was with the quality of the tuna. After the meal, the owner brought over complimentary matcha-flavored mochi ice-cream, which was really nice of them. I would 100% come back.

A small spot with a charming, casual, cozy and Japanese feel. We enjoyed a selection of rolls, the delicious fresh green tea and seaweed salad which was great and the Korean dumpling soup special which was a first for both of us. Not a big fan of the rice cakes in the soup, but the broth was very tasty. A little pricey at $17 a bowl. We had a great time and would come back. Service was prompt and friendly.

In town for business and craving some sushi, so I dialed up the ole Yelp machine and found this great little gem not far from my hotel. It had a few very good reviews, so I thought I would give it a shot and boy am I glad I did. It's run by a cute little older couple who do all the work and treat you like family. They bring you a pot of tea along with your menu and immediately you feel welcome. I ordered 2 rolls and both were delicious!!! They even bring you a decadent little ice cream dessert at the end. Yeah, I'll be back!!!

This is by far our favorite sushi restaurant. It is clean, the food is delicious and the owners friendly. Whether we stop in or do a take out order, it is always fresh and delicious! Our routine rolls are the Sweet Roll, Futo roll, Boston Roll, California, and the spicy crab. I cannot say that they our favorites because we have never had a roll here that we didn't love - they have all been delicious! They also have some delicious appetizers and their sushi is really good! The owners are friendly and very welcoming! Stop in and enjoy a quiet dinner or order some takeout. Either way you are going to enjoy the experience!

I have driven by here many times, but this was our first stop. There is a part of me that is resistant to writing this review, fearful that this quiet place will no longer be the hidden gem that it is, however it is part of our job to pay it forward and reward the quality experience the owners have provided. The location is unassuming and the parking lot easy to pass by, however if you appreciate a focus on the basics without pretension, this is worth a visit. As a bit of a kimchi snob, the dumplings are very good. When ordering sushi we often focus on the fish and often take for granted how important the rice is. Whatever is different about the type or cooking method, I so enjoyed the rice. The fish was good, fresh, and clean. We didn't try the ramen but I would expect it to be as solid as everything else we tried. The entire place is very clean, organized and neat. It was very obvious the the owners are proud of what they serve and take care to provide quality. If it is busy when you go, you may have a little wait, but enjoy the tea provided when you first sit down and appreciate the small business, owner operator experience you are having.
